An autobiography of “Posterman” Daniel Strebin MY PASSION FOR VINTAGE FILMS began quite early in life, as by the age of seven I could already recognize the difference between film as throwaway entertainment, and those rare examples of something truly timeless and memorable, films which remain indelible in my memory to this day (many, many years later). Luckily I grew up in a community blessed by an independent television station programmed by an educated and enlightened film historian, filling my sensibility with the best of the golden age of cinema long before I ever reached university and traditional studies. I was constantly frustrated by the impossibility of acquiring genuine film posters, a commodity which had always been, from its inception, strictly controlled by theatrical distribution with standing orders for destruction before allowing the general public access to these taunting talismans of the screen. Always craving some memento or artifact from these icons of film history, for many years I was forced to compromise with the sort of traces from the past which were designed for public consumption such as fan magazines with covers of Marilyn Monroe.
Once I finally tapped into the secret sources for vintage film posters I quickly dropped all other interests and never looked back. The process of building and refining my collection has now taken over 25 years, and I sincerely hope that the process of letting it go and sharing it with the world will take the rest of my productive lifetime. My education and my collection have both benefitted greatly from my extensive travels in Europe, thanks in large part to my European wife and child, and you will see in the inventory presented here my great appreciation for the superior artistic qualities of not only the foreign poster designs, but also of many of the foreign film makers as well.
